SYRIZA MEP Stelios Kouloglou expressed his satisfaction for the European Parliament’s approval by a large majority of the resolution calling for the start of accession negotiations with Northern Macedonia and Albania.

As rapporteur for the resolution, on behalf of the European Left, S. Kouloglou described as «an important step» the fact that after hard work in the AFET of the European Parliament, today the European Parliament called with an overwhelming majority to start accession negotiations for the North Macedonia and Albania, criticizing the decision of the Council that blocked the process and asking the Council to immediately correct this «historic mistake». In particular, for Northern Macedonia, the European Parliament resolution, among other things, congratulates the country on the «historically satisfactory settlement of difficult, and anti now open, bilateral issues», such as the «Prespa Agreement». Also, calls on the Council to take into account the positive messages that this agreement sends out, but also the negative effects of its decision on political stability in the region.

The European Parliament resolution, which was approved by 412 votes to 136 with 30 abstentions, reads that N. Macedonia and Albania meet the conditions for the start of accession negotiations with the EU and describes the failure to start this process as «wrong». MEPs express «deep disappointment» at the fact that the October 17th and 18th summits did not come to agreement to opening accession talks and deplore the attitude of France, Denmark and the Netherlands in blocking the decision.
